Search Engine Marketing 101 E-mail

Search engine marketing may sound like Greek to the uninitiated, and can get quite complicated even for those that know what they are doing.  However, by breaking it down you can expose the information that you need and turn it to a powerful marketing tool.

Keywords and search terms are what people use when they use a search engine to look for a topic on the internet.  By using these, you can help direct your target audience to your site.  However, in order to use them effectively, you really must have the knowledge on your target audience and what words and phrases they are using.  If you and your target audience are not on the same page, you will have great difficulty finding each other.

Online, you can find several tools and services that will help you find the right search terms for your needs.  For instance, programs like Word Tracker will help you find all of the possible words that you should include in order to generate traffic.  Another option is to get a search term list that will help you to identify trends.

Of course, once you have your keywords you have to understand search engine optimization.  Basically, this is being able to comprehend what the search engines are trying to find when they come to your site, and changing it to fit them.  This in turn will cause more people to find your site.

First, you should think about your domain name.  You do not necessarily need a keyword in your domain name unless it makes it easier for visitors to remember.  You also do not need to buy multiple domains in order for search engines to find you.  Next, you need to consider the title tag.  This should include keywords or phrases, and are more important than the name of your company.  An even more important consideration is your Meta Description tag.  This should briefly explain what the site is about.  Of course, the copywriting is a major consideration as well, since this is the text that the visitors will see.  Make sure that this is written properly.  Other things, like including images or having a site map can also make your website stand out to search engines.  If you have problems, there is plenty of professional and free help available online.

Once you have perfected your site, you need to submit it to the search engines.  You can do this with a free submit form, letting the search engine find you, or by paying the search engine to index your site.  Submitting the free form is good for smaller search engines, while using directories to have the engine find you are a good all around approach.  Paying to have the engine index you should be done with caution, since there are numerous scams out there that will not do you a bit of good.

Another consideration with Search Engine Marketing is your link popularity.  This is the number of incoming links that you have.  These can come from other websites, directories, or articles, and the more you have, the better.

Before you can worry about getting links to you, you need to make sure that your site is worthwhile to visitors.  Update your content with good information to draw people in.  Once you have someplace that people want to visit, you can start submitting it to directories.  Then, you can start looking for sites that offer information in a similar or complimentary genre, and contact them about sharing links.  Always look for partnering sites that are going to benefit you in the long run for the most success.

Of course, not everything is successful.  Do not use automated programs for links.  Do not expect everyone to want to exchange links, or to even send you a reply.  You can always try again later on.

Once you know what to do, it is easy to expose Search Engine Marketing and use it like the tool that it is.
